DOS Shortcuts in Win95/NT

Launching DOS applications from a DOS shortcut on the Win95/NT desktop is very convenient, but can fail with messages such as "Insufficient memory". This is caused by limited conventional memory (no matter how much extended memory is available!) and competition with Windows drivers etc. loaded in conventional memory. To overcome this problem, launch the DOS shortcut's property sheet and select the Memory panel and change the Initial environment setting to its maximum of 4096 bytes. Dynamic memory allocation on the Screen panel should also be disabled.
